Transforming Lives: Preventing Violence Against Children Across East Africa

Raising Voices

Raising Voices is a Kampala-based non-profit organization that has been working to prevent violence against women and children since 2000. Through its three core program areas—Practice, Learning, and Influencing—the organization develops and implements evidence-based methodologies to prevent violence, grounded in the realities of schools and communities. Scaling of the Good School Toolkit (GST) Raising Voices scaled up the Good School Toolkit (GST), an evidence-based program designed to transform school culture and prevent violence against children with support from the Learning Initiative. The toolkit has been widely adopted across Uganda’s primary and secondary schools, with the initiative reinforcing the use of positive, respectful interactions in educational settings. .

Reach and Impact:

Reach and Impact:

Significant Reduction in Violence: With the Learning Initiative’s emphasis on evidence-based outcomes, the GST was shown to reduce physical violence by 42% in participating schools. Teachers trained with the toolkit employ non-violent discipline

Empowerment of Teachers and Students: The GST has trained 8,824 teachers, equipping them with skills to manage conflicts constructively. Students are now more empowered to report abuse and engage in conversations about safety, resulting in a collaborative approach to violence prevention.

Policy Influence and National Integration: With the support and visibility gained through the Learning Initiative, Raising Voices collaborated with Uganda’s Ministry of Education to promote the GST as a model for positive discipline. This toolkit, now recognized by Uganda’s National Curriculum Development Center, is guiding discussions on alternative discipline methods and driving national-level policy change.
